Music at South Bersted Church of England Primary School:

Music is delivered to children in a variety of ways including our music lessons which follow the Curriculum, school choir, singing as part of our whole school Collective Worships, instrument lessons in Years 4 and 6 as well as the opportunity to learn guitar, ukulele and or a wind instrument.

Curriculum:

Music is taught on a weekly basis within the classroom setting.  We follow a progression enabling children to acquire and develop skills in rhythm and pulse, composition, instrumental playing, improvisation skills and listening and appraising music.  We use the Charangua scheme of work to deliver these lessons.

School Choir:

The school choir runs for 2 terms a year and is open to children from Year 1 to year 6.  During the Autumn term, the children build a reportoire for Christmas where they perform at local events and at the school Christmas fayre.  During the Spring term, the children take part in The Big Sing, a locality event involving local schools.  They perform in front of hundreds of people and watch performances from other schools.  The choir also performs for the Easter gathering at the end of the term.

Collective Worship:

Music is a key part of collective worship and is used as a focus for the children arriving in the hall.  They get the opportunity to listen to and apparise various artists and genres.  Pupils sing reguarly and often learn whole school songs for end of year performances.

Instrument Lessons:

As part of music lessons, children are given the opportunity to play the glockenspiel and djembe drums. They learn to read music and perform to an audience.

Productions and Nativities:

Early years and KS1 take part in a nativity performance each Autumn term.  They learn songs by heart and sing in parts, perfoming together for parents.

Year 6 prepare a Summer production where pupils get the opportunity to perform in front of others, sing solos and learn lines.

Peripatetic Music Lessons

In addition to music lessons in class, peripatetic music teachers mainly from  https://www.westsussexmusic.co.uk/ provide specific music lessons in our school and we currently have children being taught guitar and ukulele.

The lessons are taught to children in small groups or to individuals during school time. There is a charge to these lessons and arrangements will need to be made direct with West Sussex Music Service
