‘Life in all its Fullness,’ (John 10:10) underpins our curriculum at South Bersted and therefore we believe it is essential to ensure our children have the skills to thrive after they have left South Bersted. Through our Learning for Life curriculum we are committed to giving them the skills to do this.

Each of the below headings contributes to our Learning for Life curriculum. Further information on each area can be located on the curriculum tabs.

Core Elements of our Learning for Life Curriculum

Philosophy for Children (P4C)

At least three times a half term, our children take part in Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions. Bi- weekly whole school P4C sessions focus on global issues, courageous advocacy and the Christian Aid Global Calendar. Children also participate bi-weekly in class led P4C where they will direct the line of enquiry.

Outdoor Learning

Every half term all classes participate in an ‘outdoor leaning’ afternoon where they develop skills such as: whittling, sawing, pond dipping and fire lighting. This aims to build children’s resilience and perseverance and give them the opportunity to experience activities out of the norm.

PSHE

Our PSHE curriculum has been developed with three core modules:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in the Wider World

Courageous Advocacy

Where appropriate, teachers plan opportunities for pupils to develop their courageous advocacy where pupils have the opportunity to look beyond themselves and develop an understanding of disadvantage, deprivation and the exploitation of the natural world. In 2022, the school achieved the Global Neighbours accreditation as part of our approach and curriculum development.

Children as Leaders

We aim to give children the opportunity to contribute to school life and develop their leadership skills. We do this by electing:

  • Junior Governors
  • School Council
  • Eco Leaders
  • Mental Health Ambassadors
  • Little Leaders
