Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Through visiting the school library, pupils will select a book within their own level and read it at their own pace. When a pupil has finished their book, they will take a short quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that the child has understood what they have read.

As children pass quizzes, they receive certification to show their success. There is also a competitive element in school as classes compete against each other for the most quizzes passed each half term! At South Bersted Church of England Primary School, we also want to recognise those children that are going above and beyond by celebrating those pupils who become word millionaires.

Accelerated Reader (AR) provides both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice.

Most popular children’s books are on the Accelerated Reader programme so children can select from the wide range of books in within our class and school libraries. Pupils wishing to look up titles that are part of the Accelerated Reader programme can search through over 25,000 books on www.arbookfind.co.uk.
